Cheri, Cheri, Quite Contrary, How does your garden grow?

Fairly well, considering I have been working for the last several days along side hubby and Kiddo #2 to clean up the winter mess that remained in my flower beds.

There are two trains of thought on yards.  You like planting beds or you hate planting beds.  As a realtor I am here to tell you the second train is by far and away the most favored of those two trains.  All aboard the "Don't want to have to take care of it" style of yard.

Unfortunately, for my husband and children, that is not the train I choose to board.  I love planting things in the ground.  I have actually had people remark that it is just too much.  Too, bad for them. It's my yard and I am digging, planting, pruning, mulching, potting, picking and generally going balls out having fun in the dirt.  Yes, I am.

Five years ago when we bought the "money pit" that we now call home, we were "downsizing".  We had a mega garage sale coming out of Texas that was to help us simplify our life.  Actually, this was our second downsizing attempt.  We sold off what we thought was a considerable amount of stuff when we moved to Texas.  Our "smaller" home in Texas didn't seem all that small so we tried it again when we moved to Kansas.  AND HERE WE ARE

People that owned our house had 5 kids

A lot of nothingness, calling me to take action

Pretty barren back here.

The pictures that you see above you were taken May of 2005. This would of been the first time we looked at what was to become our house "lite".  As we look back at the pictures, we aren't entirely sure why we chose this one.  HHMMM  Maybe we felt sorry for it's being so lack luster.

Back to the 2 trains of thought.  Our thought is that plants will help. (can't hurt it for sure)

So, we dig, and mulch, and water, and weed for these past 4 years.  (the first year was a bust as we didn't move in until July)

Now, I am waiting for my plants to start blooming and the weather to start behaving.
AND FOR MY GARDEN TO GROW

The Good for the day...The sun is shining.

The Bad for the Day.... It is still really cold again today.  Hey, Spring, we have had this talk before!

The Weird for the day...Here in Kansas my most prolific weed to try to keep out of my lawn and flower beds is the dandelion.  In Nebraska my most prolific weed to try to keep out of my lawn and garden was Ditch Weed.  Do you know what Ditch Weed is?

Thank you AngelBaby, I really do find yard work is good for the spirit. Thanks for coming by.

Hi Michele, Yeh, I know what you mean. In Texas we had some lovely gardens but they aren't lush like here. The plants there really have to be able to withstand the heat. I will say I so miss the crepe myrtle trees though. I have one variety here but it pales in comparison to the beauties there. Oh, and the Indian Hawthornes, too. They can't survive our winters. Check my post tomorrow. I think your name is going to be mentioned. (well if I get it done that is. I have company coming over for supper tonight)

I don't go with the less is more concept being applied to your yard. I think your yard is lovely. I love planting things too, so what do I do? Buy a condo and I can't plant anything. And then I'm going to move back down to Tucson where you can't grow much when it comes to flowers, they all burn up. Oh well, I did enjoy living in Cali. I spent a lot of time planting things and making hanging baskets full of flowers. So dig girl, dig. It's good for the soul, and you can get rid of lots o agressions pulling up the weeds.

Your yard is GORGEOUS! We actually just planted some blueberry bushes in our yard. Can't wait for them to mature! We have quite a large plot of land, for city folk, and we've done shamefully little with it. Maybe this year... :-)

Not sure what ditch weed is, but my biggest problem is chick weed and crabgrass. They have an unstoppable root structure! This year I've planted my garden (I've been learning and progressing over the last few years) My tulips were amazing and my mums came back with a vengeance. But I've decided to plant veggies too and to save on the weeding I've planted them as decorative plants in my berms and flower beds ;)

If you ever get bored with your yard, I could use some help LOL Your garden is beautiful and I am envious!

Hi Wolfe, I think you and Trina and Hubby and I would have a lot in common.(small grandchild for one thing) Although we have no knowledge of sailing at all. Where we live we would be far from anywhere to sail. Sounds wonderful.
I hope you have a great trip.

There are days that I would be jealous of the condo. No upkeep, no mowing etc. I like this time of year but other times like the dead of winter when scooping snow gets old in a hurry. I remember when I lived in Phoenix how difficult it is to do anything except desert type of plants. In Tucson are you going to go into another condo type of home?

Hi Nicky,

Thanks! I am jealous on both the blueberries and the large lot of land. We had a large lot in Nebraska and thought we needed to start living more simply. I miss having the space and privacy. I love idea of blueberries. I don't know how they do in KS. Need to do my homework.

thanks for stopping by

wow, Trina, it sounds like you have gardening mastered. My tulips didn't do well this year at all. My lilies look like they are coming in just fine. I don't do well with veggies on this lot as it is too shady but I do love to vegetable garden. There are community gardens but right now there is a waiting list. wouldn't that be fun to have someone else that loves to garden to work with. My neighbors and friends here think this is a total waste of time and energy.

I will be thinking of you next week. Have a safe trip. (you are leaving early next week aren't you?)I hope it is all smooth sailing.

Oh, Trina, I meant to tell you too that we also struggle with crabgrass here. It's the bain of our lawns.
And as far as ditch weed. It is marijuana that grows wild. We had it growing in patches around the base of our house.AND it's really hard to kill off. A person wouldn't get in trouble because its a weed there but when out-of- towners come they think you have your own little pot farm growing. The locals can tell it isn't the real stuff.

Seriously... get yourself to Florida..I need inspiration for my over large lawn area....and if you like weeding.. all the better!

Your yard is beautiful, Cheryl. Personally, I am on a third train ... perennials everywhere that the gardeners take care of ... and six small pots that serve as my gardens. Which works fine if I can keep the rabbits out of my pots.

Hi Clare and Gary, I am going to look you up some day when I get down there. (don't lose sleep over that) You seem to be good host/hostess hauling Anne all over and keeping her amused and all. The driving video made me a little nervous. (I'll drive over us over to see the mermaids)

I am quite the weed puller. This is how I work out all my aggression with the local climate of politics and all. Nary a weed in my yard.

Cperz said...

Hi Bud, I am on and off that 3rd train myself. 90% of my garden is perennials. I throw just a few flats of annuals in each season for color. I don't let the lawn services do anything other than the chemicals and pruning these days. My final straw was when they would come and mow while it was raining. god forbid that their schedule was thrown off by weather. Thanks for stopping by. Talk to you soon.

So funny, I've had traffic from this post....with my blog name. I'm also a realtor (inactive due to injury) ..small world. You've done a lovely job....so serene!

That is funny. We absolutely have a lot in common. I went visiting on your site and your list of things on your about me page...well most of those could be about me too.
zany, crazy, emphatic, sometimes I am funny, sometimes I am an optimist.

We have moved a lot also, I have, 2 grown children and I love to sew and decorate. Truly some of my custom curtains, bedspreads and drapes rival those of people that know what in the hell they are doing.

I am a realtor, inactive because I am being lazy and refuse to haul my ass around to a bunch of foreclosures only to find that the people can't borrow money due to a credit score of 400 and a default on their last place. (see what I mean about optimist sometimes.

I don't have my own remote control but I do empathize. I haven't been diagnosed with AHDD but it wouldn't surprise anyone if I was.

I am older than you and you are way prettier than me.

I am so going to follow your blog.
